Economic Audit - Superdrug
Domain: Economic - Economic Entity scope: Superdrug Stores plc - the UK health & beauty retailer, owned by A.S. Watson Group (CK Hutchison Holdings / Li Ka-shing family; Temasek minority stake). Superdrug-corporate’s OWN economic footprint is in scope; the A.S. Watson / CK Hutchison parent and the Temasek owner (Hong Kong / Singapore - none Israeli) are documented and attributed at parent/owner level. Marketplace-host vs direct-retail and settlement-origin vs Israel-proper distinctions are maintained. Compiled: 2026-06-25 Method: Live web search only
Supply Chain & Sourcing Relationships
Superdrug’s most material Israel-linked supply nexus concerns the stocking of Ahava Dead Sea Laboratories products on its online marketplace. Ahava is an Israeli cosmetics brand formulated with Dead Sea minerals/mud, historically operating from Mitzpe Shalem, a settlement in the occupied West Bank.1 Ahava products were available via Superdrug’s marketplace through a verified third-party seller - not directly stocked by Superdrug as a retailer - until at least mid-March 2026, when the listing was removed; in early June 2026 Superdrug confirmed it had blocked the brand entirely (“We have now removed the SKU and implemented additional system actions that will block and prevent any future listings of this brand from all sellers”).23 The removal followed AFSC evidence (photographs/video of 2025–2026-dated chemical containers and Dead Sea mud at the Mitzpe Shalem settlement site).4 No public evidence was identified of Superdrug stocking any other Israeli-origin or Dead-Sea cosmetics brand (e.g. Sabon, Premier Dead Sea, Seacret) directly or via marketplace, nor of any Israeli-domiciled supplier providing raw materials/components to Superdrug’s own-label range.
Product Origin, Labeling & Regulatory Compliance
Ahava was incorporated in Israel and historically headquartered at Mitzpe Shalem; the Mitzpe Shalem and Kalia kibbutzim (both West Bank settlements) historically held a combined ~44% of Ahava, with Fosun International (a Chinese conglomerate) acquiring a controlling stake in 2016.156 In September 2025, Ahava and Fosun were added to the UN OHCHR database of companies involved in activities connected with illegal Israeli settlements in the OPT.7 Settlement-origin vs Israel-proper distinction: Ahava contests post-2022 settlement-origin attribution, asserting that finished manufacturing relocated into internationally-recognised Israeli territory by 2022; the AFSC’s 2025–2026-dated-container evidence is the basis for contesting that relocation claim, and the UN listing was issued notwithstanding Ahava’s stated relocation.87 During the period Ahava products were on Superdrug’s marketplace, settlement-origin labelling/disclosure obligations under UK trade rules rested primarily with Ahava and the marketplace seller rather than Superdrug, given the marketplace structure. No public evidence identified of any Superdrug own-brand product carrying Israeli-origin labelling or settlement-linked Dead Sea ingredients.
Investment, Capital & Financial Exposure
Superdrug Stores plc has no identified direct investment in Israeli companies, Israeli capital markets, or Israeli-domiciled financial instruments. At parent level (attributed to CK Hutchison, noted for context): CK Hutchison’s subsidiary Hutchison Water International formerly held a 49% stake in the Sorek desalination plant (Israel-proper, not OPT), which it fully exited in June 2018 when IDE Technologies exercised its first-refusal right (≈NIS 195 million); no subsequent CK Hutchison investment in Israeli infrastructure or Israeli-domiciled companies was identified for 2019–2026.9 Temasek Holdings (Singapore sovereign fund) holds ~24.95% of A.S. Watson Group (acquired 2014); Temasek is a Singapore state entity, not Israeli, and its broader-portfolio Israel exposure is not attributable to Superdrug-corporate.10
Operational Presence & Market Activity
Superdrug operates no stores in Israel. It is a UK and Ireland health & beauty chain (~800 stores) with online operations extending to Denmark, Finland, and Sweden; its retail footprint is entirely outside the Middle East, and no public evidence was identified of any Superdrug commercial presence, franchise, distribution agreement, or online operation targeting Israeli consumers.11
Corporate Structure & Foundational Ties
Superdrug Stores plc is a wholly-owned subsidiary of A.S. Watson Group (Health & Beauty UK), the retail division of CK Hutchison Holdings (registered Cayman Islands, headquartered Hong Kong, controlled by the Li Ka-shing family); Temasek Holdings (Singapore) holds ~24.95% of A.S. Watson Group.1210 Neither CK Hutchison, A.S. Watson, nor Temasek is Israeli-domiciled, Israeli-controlled, or Israeli-state-linked, and the corporate chain from Superdrug to its ultimate owners contains no Israeli entity at any tier; the former Hutchison Water Sorek stake (Israel-proper) was exited in June 2018 and is historical.9 These ownership facts are parent-level and do not constitute a Superdrug-corporate economic tie to Israel.
Profit Repatriation & Economic Contribution
Superdrug’s retail profits flow upward to A.S. Watson Group and ultimately to CK Hutchison (Hong Kong), with distributions accruing to CK Hutchison shareholders (Li Ka-shing interests) and Temasek (Singapore); no profits are repatriated to Israel or to Israeli-domiciled entities at any tier. During the period Ahava products were sold via Superdrug’s marketplace, a commercial transaction fee would have flowed from the third-party seller to Superdrug per sale (volume/value not publicly disclosed), with the underlying product revenue accruing to the third-party seller and ultimately to Ahava/Fosun - not to Superdrug directly; following the June 2026 platform block, this channel is closed. No other channel by which Superdrug’s revenues contribute economically to Israel or Israeli-domiciled entities was identified.
