Economic Audit - Pret A Manger
Domain: Economic - Economic Entity scope: Pret A Manger Ltd (UK) - the sandwich/coffee chain, owned by JAB Holding Company (Reimann family) since 2018. Pret-corporate’s OWN economic footprint is in scope; the Israeli franchise partners (Fox Group / Yarzin Sella) and Gulf franchisees are attributed at franchisee-level, and the JAB/Reimann owner is attributed at owner level. Compiled: 2026-06-24 Method: Live web search only
Supply Chain & Sourcing Relationships
Pret’s publicly disclosed coffee supply chain draws on organic beans from Peru, Honduras, Ethiopia, and Sumatra.1 No Israeli-domiciled supplier of food ingredients, coffee, packaging, or other materials to Pret-corporate was identified in any public disclosure, supplier page, or trade-press reporting.2 No public evidence identified of any Israeli-origin ingredient or material in Pret’s supply chain.
Product Origin, Labeling & Regulatory Compliance
Pret prepares food fresh daily at shop level from ingredients sourced through its UK-managed supply chain; no products bearing Israeli geographical indication, settlement-origin labelling obligations, or Israeli-manufactured goods were identified in Pret’s range or filings. No public evidence identified of Israeli-origin products in Pret’s retail or food-service range.
Investment, Capital & Financial Exposure
The most material economic event in this domain is a termination payment flowing from Pret to Israeli parties. Following cancellation of its Israel franchise agreement (see Operational Presence), Pret agreed to pay £3 million (≈$3.9 million) in compensation to Fox Group and Yarzin Sella Group to settle threatened litigation, reimbursing the franchisees for preparatory investment already made; as a condition, Pret must involve Fox Group in any new attempt to launch in Israel within 36 months of the June 2024 termination (i.e. before ~October 2027).3 No Pret-corporate equity investment, bond holding, joint-manufacturing venture, or Israeli institutional capital exposure was identified; the £3m outflow is Pret’s only confirmed financial transfer to Israel-domiciled counterparties.
Owner-level note (JAB/Reimann, attributed to the owner, not Pret-corporate): JAB Holding, the Reimann-family vehicle that owns Pret, funds the Alfred Landecker Foundation, which supports Holocaust education and combating antisemitism and maintains a documented research cooperation with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.45 These are owner/foundation-level ties, not JAB direct commercial or capital investment in Israel, and do not constitute Pret-corporate economic exposure to Israel.
Operational Presence & Market Activity
KEY ITEM - Israel presence: planned, signed, cancelled; no shops opened. In December 2022 Pret entered a non-binding agreement with Israeli parties Fox-Wizel Ltd (Fox Group) and Yarzin Sella Restaurants to franchise the brand in Israel, formalised as a binding franchise licence in Q1 2023.67 Under the agreement, a jointly-owned Israeli franchise vehicle (Fox 75% / Yarzin Sella 25%) was to open at least 40 Pret stores over 10 years (target: 40 by 2033, extendable), with royalties to Pret as a monthly percentage of net sales, and the first location slated for Tel Aviv Port (December 2024 target).783
Cancellation: in May–June 2024 Pret invoked force majeure and terminated the agreement, citing “significant ongoing travel restrictions” from the Gaza conflict that prevented its teams from conducting the compliance checks and barista-training required to launch a new market; the termination was also reported amid sustained pressure and threatened boycott campaigns from UK pro-Palestinian groups.3910 Outcome: no Pret shops opened in Israel at any point - the franchise was signed but never operationalised, and as of this audit Pret has no stores in Israel.39
Franchisee vs corporate distinction: the arrangement was a licensing/franchise structure in which Fox Group and Yarzin Sella would have operated the stores, borne the capital cost, and held the Israeli legal entity, with Pret-corporate as licensor receiving royalties; no Pret-owned or Pret-operated Israeli entity existed or was created.78 Pret’s confirmed Gulf franchise markets (Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain) are franchisee-operated and do not constitute Pret-corporate direct presence.11
Corporate Structure & Foundational Ties
Pret A Manger is a UK-incorporated company; JAB Holding Company (Luxembourg; Reimann family of Germany) acquired a majority stake in September 2018 via JAB Consumer Fund.12 JAB is a privately held investment vehicle, and no Israeli sovereign wealth fund, Israeli institutional shareholder, or Israeli co-investor in Pret-corporate was identified. Owner-level (attributed to the Reimann family, not Pret A Manger corporate): the Reimann family established the Alfred Landecker Foundation in 2019 in acknowledgement of the family’s Nazi-era complicity; it funds Holocaust research, anti-antisemitism work, and a cooperation with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem - philanthropic/owner-level activities of the Reimann family, not Pret A Manger corporate, with JAB not an Israeli company and holding no known Israeli state equity.4513 No Israeli co-founder, board member, or Israeli-domiciled structural tie at Pret-corporate level was identified.
Profit Repatriation & Economic Contribution
Because no Pret-corporate operations were established in Israel (the franchise was cancelled before any store opened), no profit was generated in Israel, no royalty stream from Israeli stores accrued to Pret-corporate, and no economic contribution to the Israeli economy flowed from Pret trading operations.39 The sole financial flow toward Israel was the £3m termination payment from Pret to its Israeli franchise partners - remedial in character, not ongoing economic integration. No public evidence identified of any Israeli tax registration, Israeli VAT/customs exposure, or profit-repatriation mechanism relating to Israel.
