EDOM was also confirmed as a Sainsbury’s supplier in 2013;⁴ research cited by War on Want found EDOM sourced produce from settlements while labelling it “Produce of Israel.”¹ Hadiklaim is a date-grower cooperative linked to campaigner concerns about settlement-origin Medjoul dates.⁵ Additional companies in the period’s research (Agrexco, Arava, Adafresh) are not confirmed as active suppliers by post-2020 public evidence.¹

Israeli-origin produce documented as stocked by Sainsbury’s as of late 2019 included mangoes, potatoes, avocados, grapefruit, persimmons, samphire, and fresh herbs.² Sainsbury’s states it does not knowingly source own-brand products from West Bank settlements, and that it sources from Palestinian growers (labelled separately).⁶ No post-2020 primary documentation confirms or denies the continuation of specific Israeli supplier contracts.

Product Origin, Labeling & Regulatory Compliance

The settlement-goods labelling question is the central economic-domain compliance issue for UK supermarkets selling Israeli produce.

2007–2008 mislabelling. Following a 2007 ITN investigation, Sainsbury’s admitted it had mislabelled West Bank-grown Medjoul dates as “Produce of Israel” and said it would label West Bank produce as such.³ Activist photographs in 2008 still showed Sainsbury’s own-brand Medjoul dates labelled “Grown in West Bank” inside the Jordan Valley settlements of Netiv Hagdud and Massua - settlement-grown produce sold under a generic West Bank label rather than identified as settlement produce.³

DEFRA guidance. UK government guidance (December 2009) states that labelling occupied-territory produce as “Produce of Israel” is a consumer-information offence, recommending “Israeli settlement produce” or “Palestinian produce.”⁷ This non-statutory guidance is the regulatory benchmark against which Sainsbury’s labelling has been assessed.

Ongoing allegations. Research in the Corporate Occupation “Apartheid in the Fields” 2020 update found Sainsbury’s Medjoul dates had, by 2016, been relabelled “Product of either the US or Israel,” suggesting West Bank sourcing may have been discontinued or rerouted; campaigners nonetheless continued to assert settlement produce reaches shelves under “Produce of Israel” labels.²⁸

ICJP October 2024 legal notice. The International Centre of Justice for Palestinians issued formal legal notices to eight UK supermarkets including Sainsbury’s, invoking the International Criminal Court Act 2001 and the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and citing six product categories - dates, mangoes, avocados, tahini, halva, and bakery products - as settlement-linked goods, with a 14-day response window and a warning of director liability.⁹ No public Sainsbury’s response was identified.

ICJP June 2025 legal notice (Northern Ireland). A further notice was issued directly to Sainsbury’s, citing continued stocking of settlement products and notifying the Northern Ireland Executive, following a 4,500-signature petition targeting the Kennedy Centre Belfast branch.⁸

SodaStream. Sainsbury’s stocks SodaStream; at its 2014 AGM the board acknowledged stocking the product, then manufactured at Mishor Adumim in the West Bank.¹⁰ SodaStream relocated its main plant to Lehavim, southern Israel, in 2015, though advocacy concerns continued.¹¹ In November 2025, ICJP warned major UK retailers of legal exposure from continued SodaStream stocking; BDS activists who stickered Sainsbury’s SodaStream units were charged with criminal damage and acquitted in October 2025.¹¹¹²

2014 kosher-shelf incident. During the 2014 Gaza conflict, the manager of a Sainsbury’s Holborn branch pre-emptively cleared the kosher section (mostly UK-made products) during a pro-Palestinian protest; Sainsbury’s apologised, restocked immediately, and said it was an individual decision, not policy.¹³ (Treated in detail in the Political audit.)

Investment, Capital & Financial Exposure

No public evidence has been identified of J Sainsbury plc holding Israeli government bonds, Israel-linked equity stakes, or direct financial investments connected to Israeli state institutions or settlement enterprises. Sainsbury’s is listed on the London Stock Exchange (SBRY); no Sainsbury’s pension fund, treasury portfolio, or subsidiary holding of designated Israel-linked instruments was located. Its January 2025 bond issuance was a standard UK corporate debt placement with no identified Israeli component.¹⁴ No public evidence identified of Sainsbury’s Bank or Nectar participating in any Israeli financial or loyalty-scheme partnership.

Operational Presence & Market Activity

J Sainsbury plc operates exclusively in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. No evidence was identified of Sainsbury’s, Argos, Habitat, or any subsidiary operating stores, distribution facilities, offices, or joint ventures inside Israel or the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
