Key Facts:

Executive Summary

The documented Israel nexus of Balenciaga is commercial and indirect. Balenciaga has no identified Israeli subsidiary, store or office. Its goods reach Israeli consumers through independent partners: Elshard (co-owned by Roni Irani), reported on 22 January 2025 to hold exclusive import rights, and the Irani Group/Irani Corp.1 A 29 August 2022 report names Balenciaga among brands sold at the Irani Group’s “Five Point Four” concept in Tel Aviv.4 In July 2026, Calcalist Tech and Sourcing Journal each said Irani “exclusively represents” Balenciaga.2, 3 The reports use the present tense but give no start date or term.

The evidence has limits. The 2025 import-rights claim was single-sourced and its status is recorded as unknown. Irani Corp’s own LinkedIn self-description, as read by the audit, names Saint Laurent but not Balenciaga.16 Sources conflict on Irani Corp’s headquarters (Amsterdam per Calcalist; Tel Aviv per AroundDeal).2, 16 The Digital audit’s statement that no Israeli distributor relationship was confirmed predates the July 2026 reports and is superseded on that point. Even so, this is a third-party physical-goods distribution channel, not a digital service.

On the political side, no Balenciaga or Kering statement on Israel-Palestine was found from October 2023 through the research date, although Balenciaga made public statements on Ukraine and on Mahsa Amini in 2022.5, 6 Group-level findings about Groupe Artémis’s sibling holdings (Puma SE, Creative Artists Agency) are documented but are not Balenciaga or Kering acts.

Nothing in the evidence supports a military, defence-supply, settlement or Israeli-technology nexus. Balenciaga and Kering are absent from Who Profits, AFSC Investigate, the OHCHR database updates reviewed, and the Amnesty September 2025 briefing.9, 10, 11, 17 The audits’ Military and Digital results are no public evidence identified. The final V6.6 outcome is V_MAX 3.90 (Economic), giving BRS 339, Tier D (Moderate Complicity).

Corporate Overview

Balenciaga was founded in San Sebastián by Cristóbal Balenciaga (the audits give 1917 or 1919), moved to Paris in 1937 and closed in 1968. It was relaunched in 1986 and acquired by Gucci Group/PPR (later Kering) in 2001.12 It is a wholly owned Kering subsidiary. Kering is controlled by Groupe Artémis, which also controls Christie’s and, since October 2023, majority-owns Creative Artists Agency. Artémis held a 29.06% stake in Puma SE until October 2026.

The audits found no Israeli subsidiary, acquired Israeli company, state ownership, golden share, or Israeli real-estate or capital investment. Israeli market access runs through independent entities: Elshard (co-owned by Roni Irani) and the Irani Group/Irani Corp (Factory 54, Al Srad Ltd).1, 8, 29 Christie’s, an Artémis-level entity, maintains a Tel Aviv office, which the audits attribute to the Artémis level and not to Kering or Balenciaga.30 Kering (not Balenciaga) signed a 2023 technology agreement with the Israeli firm Sonovia, covered under Economic.

Domain Summaries

Military: Military

Mechanism of Involvement

No mechanism was identified: no public evidence identified of any contract, tender, MoU or supply relationship with the Israeli Ministry of Defence, the IDF or any other Israeli security body. The same holds for tactical or mil-spec product variants, defence-prime supply chains, base services and munitions. The audit’s eligibility check found no mechanically eligible frame, hence I=M=P=0, V=0.00. The only defence-adjacent item concerns a Kering director. Dominique D’Hinnin chaired Eutelsat, and Eutelsat (not D’Hinnin personally, nor Kering or Balenciaga) signed a French, not Israeli, defence framework agreement.31 The audit records this as non-scoring context.

Counter-Arguments and Evidence Limits

Balenciaga is a civilian luxury house, and “military-inspired” styling is not treated as a defence link. Balenciaga and Kering do not appear in Who Profits or AFSC Investigate, and the BHRRC profile records no Israel or defence content.9, 10, 32 Brands2boycott.org lists Kering and its brands as “associated with Israel,” but that is a crowd-run aggregator citing ownership alone, with no contract, date or primary source.33 Limits: Israel’s SIBAT directory could not be accessed, so that finding rests on the absence of third-party reporting. The primary text of UN report A/HRC/59/23 could not be decoded; only secondary summaries (which do not name Balenciaga) were reviewed. D’Hinnin’s continued Kering seat after 28 May 2026 is an inference, not a confirmation.

Named Entities and Evidence Map

Kering, Groupe Artémis, Pinault, de Meo, Gianangeli, Charbit and the board members named in the audit were each searched by name: none found. Delta Galil was checked as a possible intermediary and no Balenciaga or Kering link was found.

Digital: Digital

Mechanism of Involvement

No company-held digital mechanism was identified. There is no public evidence of Israeli-origin vendors (Check Point, Wiz, Nice, Verint and similar), surveillance or biometric tools, Israeli data-centre or Project Nimbus participation, Israeli R&D centres, acquisitions of Israeli technology firms, or AI supplied to Israeli state bodies. Identified vendors are non-Israeli: Salesforce, Microsoft Azure/Entra ID, Adyen, Cisco Webex, Algolia and others.24, 34 Physical-goods distribution through the Irani/Elshard channel and its websites is another party’s channel and does not create a company-held digital pipeline. The rationale-only examiner correction keeps Digital at zero.

Counter-Arguments and Evidence Limits

The September 2025 breach involved Kering’s Salesforce systems, and no source identifies any Israeli jurisdiction or infrastructure. Kering also denies paying a ransom. Kering Eyewear’s partnership with Google on AI glasses involves a US platform, and the first announced product is Gucci-branded.35 Limits: some vendor entries (2016 and 2019) predate 2020 and their current status is unknown. The sixth-year “Don’t Buy Into Occupation” report’s company list was not retrieved, so it is unresolved whether it names Kering or Balenciaga. The Digital audit’s remark that no Israeli distributor is confirmed was superseded by the Economic findings.

Named Entities and Evidence Map

Pinault, de Meo, Gianangeli, Bellettini, Charbit, Chenut, Kleitman, Denis, Chiquet and Dervisoglu were searched for Israeli technology ties: none found. Artémis’s disclosed tech investments (1stDibs, GOAT, Deezer and others) include no Israeli company.

Economic: Economic

Mechanism of Involvement

The governing frame is the Irani exclusive-representation channel. The Elshard claim is the same act and is not summed. The mechanism is third-party sale of Balenciaga goods in Israel through independent distributors: the 2022 Irani retail concept, the January 2025 import-rights report, and the two July 2026 reports.1, 4, 2, 3 The examiner applied Principle 6, because the reported exclusive arrangement post-dates the ICJ opinion and ICC warrants. This yields Sustained Trade (I 3.9). Exclusivity was not used to raise Impact. Kering-level secondary items: the Sonovia ultrasonic denim-dyeing agreement (4 May 2023; last named together 2 May 2024), and the L’Oréal 50-year Balenciaga beauty licence (in force from 31 March 2026).36, 37, 15

Counter-Arguments and Evidence Limits

Balenciaga’s strongest defence is that it has no owned Israeli entity, store, investment or profit-sharing arrangement, and the audit found no repatriation flow. It is an arm’s-length supplier to independent distributors. All identified Irani store locations are within Israel’s 1949 boundaries, with no West Bank, East Jerusalem or Golan presence.8 No OHCHR database update names Kering or Balenciaga, including the 2025 update and, per three secondary sources, the 2026 update.11, 26, 27, 28 The A/HRC/63/20 text and OHCHR press release themselves were not retrieved, and the 214-vs-212 count discrepancy is unresolved. Limits on the evidence: the 2025 import-rights claim was single-sourced when first reported. The July 2026 reports use the present tense but give no start date or term, and neither says whether “exclusively represents” means import rights, retail or a third arrangement. Irani Corp’s self-description omits Balenciaga. The Sonovia relationship’s status after May 2024 is unknown; Sonovia’s July 2026 news and Kering’s January 2026 denim-lab coverage do not mention each other.38, 39 Whether Balenciaga-licensed beauty products reach Israel via L’Oréal Israel is unestablished.40 Kering reports only an undifferentiated Middle East segment (about 79 stores, about 5% of retail revenue), with no Israel breakdown.41, 35

Named Entities and Evidence Map

Elshard/Roni Irani/Irani Group (distribution counterparties); Sonovia Ltd and PureDenim (Kering-level partner); L’Oréal/L’Oréal Israel; Christie’s (Tel Aviv office, Artémis-level, with no connection to Balenciaga operations found).30 Pinault, de Meo and Gianangeli: searched, none found.

Political: Political

Mechanism of Involvement

The examiner scored Impact 2.5 as a Double Standard (selective silence): Balenciaga and Kering spoke on Ukraine and Mahsa Amini in 2022 but made no identified statement on Gaza from October 2023 to the research date.5, 18, 6 No affirmative advocacy or business-as-usual communication was documented. Magnitude 7.0 reflects a corporate, global and ongoing posture. Proximity 9.0 reflects that the companies themselves are the silent entity. Separately, the audits document group-attribution items that are not Balenciaga or Kering acts: Artémis’s Puma stake (29.06%, 2018 to October 2026) while Puma sponsored the Israel FA until 31 December 2024, and CAA’s October 2023 pro-Israel statement and leadership letter signatures.22, 23, 25, 19, 20, 21

Counter-Arguments and Evidence Limits

Balenciaga’s defence is that corporate silence on a contested conflict is neutral, common across the fashion industry, and not an act of support for either side. The audits found no donations to FIDF or JNF-KKL, no Israel-related lobbying (Kering’s EU register entries concern ecodesign, the DMA and anti-counterfeiting), no boycott campaign or petition naming Balenciaga or Kering, and no settlement operations.42, 43 The Change.org petition names Gucci, not Balenciaga or Kering. Puma’s sponsorship was an independent company’s decision, announced as unrelated to Gaza, and the Artémis stake was passive. The CAA items concern a sibling portfolio entity. A Castro Model Ltd lead (settlement stores) was pursued and ruled out.44 One Substack post about a model and a PR staffer is uncorroborated and documents no Balenciaga action.45

Named Entities and Evidence Map

Pinault, de Meo, Bellettini, Gianangeli, Charbit, Gvasalia, Piccioli, Denis: searched, none found for Israel-Palestine statements. Group-attribution entities: Puma SE, CAA, Lourd, Lovett and Dakhil (Dakhil’s current role is unknown).
